Wondering about where to go on your Kamper Hire adventure?
So you’ve booked your VW California, but have you decided where you’re heading? It may be that you have a tight schedule planned already, but if not and you’re planning to camp out, we’ve come up with some useful information to help you create the perfect escape.
Firstly, there are a few brilliant websites which we would definitely recommend you have a browse through. With excellent searchability so you can seek out campsites which suit you down to the ground, they’re also full of handy site guides, facility details and lots of lovely, inspirational photos and information.
Our pick of the best camping & glamping websites...
This is a super easy to use directory of nearly 10,000 campsites and holiday parks in the UK & Europe. With loads of customer reviews and a search engine which filters for camper van friendly sites, by cost or by facilities (to name but a few), it’s always our first port of call.
This lists UK and French campsites and glamping sites which are that little bit more special. Judged on ambience, view, location and style, cool camping allows you to search for genres of campsite as well as by facility. The blogs are really useful too for ideas.
This one is a UK campsite focussed site and it’s lovely looking and easy to navigate. With site details and a booking enquiry facility they also include plenty of ideas about what you can do in each location. There's also a 'camping for beginners' guide - tent focussed but features some useful outdoorsy advice.
This is a great website run by the ACSI who have been reviewing campsites since 1965. With a massive list of UK and European sites to choose from, there is also a handy app you can purchase if you want to check out potential campsites, or find them on the go.

Some FAQs that often crop up...
Do all campsites allow camper vans to pitch? Not all sites are suitable for camper vans but the websites usually do specify and you can search for camper van sites on the websites featured above. Remember to let the site know if you have additional tents too.
Do I need electric hookup? Our VW vans have self sufficient batteries which charge as you drive and will hold enough charge for lights, heating, fridge etc for 2-3 days without driving. If you're just pitching at a site for a couple of nights, or planning to explore in your van you may not need hookup at all. If you want the 3 pin sockets to work in the van or you want to run additional fridges or equipment you will need a pitch with hookup.
What is wild camping - and can I do it? In England and Wales there is no legal right to wild camp (just park up on public land, wherever you fancy and sleep over) but there are plenty of remote spots. If you need to pitch and take a break, we'd say be discreet, steer clear of farmer’s fields and private property and keep out of sight of houses & farms. Don't stay too long and don't leave any rubbish behind! If you're planning on heading to Scotland, the rules are different and more flexible. Find out more here.
How much luggage can I bring? Our VW vans have generous storage and you can also hire roof bars if you have ski, surf or kids equipment and bike racks. We'd recommend bringing soft holdall bags rather than suitcases though (but you can always unpack your stuff and leave hard suitcases with us until you pick up).
