Explore characterful Brighton

Just a short drive from any of our 3 Kamper Hire pick up points is the picturesque seaside town of Brighton. An eclectic blend of characterful coastline, lively nightlife, cultural activity and wild walking, surrounded by an array of must-see places across the East Sussex area. An ideal base for your camper van holiday, Brighton offers a great choice of stop-over points including camper van friendly campsites and country pubs. And it’s the perfect gateway to camping in Kent and the Idyllic East Suffolk Coast.

The South Downs by camper van

Surrounding Brighton on all sides is the South Downs National Park. Miles of protected countryside that is a haven for wildlife and wonderful for walking, cycling and exploring by camper van. You could find an idyllic South Downs campsite base (or two) and then build an itinerary including walking the South Downs Way, marvelling at the Seven Sisters Country Park, picnicking at the beach and visiting Brighton centre.

The Bustling Centre of Brighton

A traditional seaside resort with a wealth of contemporary culture, Brighton has something for everyone. Park up your VW California close to the sea front and enjoy a blustery walk along the promenade or an ice cream in the sunshine. With lots of interesting shops and eateries tucked under the arches and the Palace pier to enjoy if you get caught in a shower, you can easily while away a good few hours without leaving the beach. If you hang about ’til sundown you’ll get to experience the awesome starling murmurations and you could light up a barbecue and enjoy an al fresco supper before heading back to your camper van. There are also some great beach bars – and often live music or outdoor cinema to enjoy if you’d like to make it a late one.

Away from the beach, there’s so much to see on a trip to Brighton. The astonishing domes of the Royal Pavillion and its beautiful gardens are well worth a stroll around and the eclectic lanes with their quirky stores are great for shopping if you like to pick up something a little bit different. To get a sense of how Brighton sits within the surrounding area, why not book a turn on the British Airways i360? Fantastic views of the coastline and countryside and a great place to plan the next days camper van road trip (because you can see for miles).

From the Sea Life Centre to the crazy golf course to the brilliant street entertainment, there’s plenty for the kids to enjoy around every corner. Brighton would make a great contrast to the delights of your camp site and give you a wonderful array of wet weather choices too. We’d definitely recommend Brighton walking tours for the kids… and for the bigger kids the ghost walk of the lanes is spooktacular fun.

Camper van hire for a water sports holiday

VW camper vans and surfboards have always been the best of friends and if you’re planning a watersports holiday in Brighton, a VW California is the perfect companion. With plenty to choose from and many award winning wines to sample – a winery road trip is a great basis for a camper van holiday. With a little bit of careful planning you could enjoy some of the most stunning scenery, the best pub lunches and the most exciting terrain… and then get a good night’s sleep in your VW California, parked up at one of the regions excellent camp sites. komoot.com is a good start point for cycle routes. We’d keep an eye out for those that include Devils’ Dyke and Ditchling Beacon.

Nearby Lewes is a must-visit

The quaint old English town is pretty and picturesque… and very hilly! This won’t be a problem for your VW California, but if you’re walking – you’ll definitely feel it the next day. Lewes Castle is the main attraction and there are fantastic views from the top of the battlements. Next to it is the archaeology museum and mini cinema, and round the corners Anne of Cleves’ house (which she never actually visited but is interesting nonetheless). If it’s a sunny day, why not take a dip in Pells Pool, Lewes’s outdoor Lido? And then there are loads of different options in Lewes for eating and drinking, whatever the weather.

Brighton’s nearby attractions

If you’re looking for other must-see attractions to enjoy from your Brighton camping base, we’d recommend the beautiful Arundel Castle and the Roman Palace at Fishbourne for a good helping of history. For astonishing views, why not take the camper van along the coast towards Eastbourne and then stop for a cuppa along the cliffs at Beachy Head?
