The Kamper Hire story began in 2002 in the mind of Kamper Hire founder Mark Daysh.
Over a beer and a barbecue Mark and his friends hatched a plan to head to the Glastonbury festival to catch headliners Coldplay, camp out under the stars and absorb the festival vibe. Rather than faff about with tent pegs, Mark was keen to make the trip even more authentic (as well as a little bit more comfortable) by hiring a VW camper van for the festival, full on-hippy style. Achieving this proved to be a lot more difficult than he imagined - and after failing miserably to find a company with a spare VW Campervan to hire, in the end it was a case of roughing it in a tent. Although the festival trip still delivered many memorable moments, it was the surprising lack of availablilty of VW vans to hire which sparked some serious thought from Mark.
Like all good business ideas, his versatile Camper Van hire company came from spotting a gap in the market.
Kamper Hire was fuelled by Mark’s passion for the great outdoors and all things adventurous. Mark initially decided to officially launch his camper hire business with a base camp in Droxford, Southampton in Hampshire by taking on a fleet of four VW T2 Campervans and before long Kamper Hire began to thrive. Mark invested in more of the characterful VW Camper Vans and their lovable and quirky style proved increasingly popular. The only problem was that in camper van terms, they were all senior citizens and were prone to behaving erratically, breaking down and clapping out. Whilst customers were charmed by the vans, they were just not reliable enough to be the basis of a robust business - so a change of direction to a more youthful, well behaved model of Camper Van was necessary.
In 2007, Mark sold his classic vans to loving homes where semi retirement meant regular easy jaunts and plenty of polishing. The alternative he’d spotted was the rather more state-of-the-art VW T5 California Camper Van. It was packed with brilliant mod-cons and a proven hard worker - but it still had plenty of style.
Hiring out this modern Camper Van attracted new kinds of customers to Kamper Hire.
The new VW T5 Camper Vans could be hired for European camper holidays, and for extended periods too, so soon the variety of uses for the Kamper Hire Camper Van fleet grew and grew. As well as family camper hire for the school holidays, escapes for couples and festival camper van hire, Kamper Hire also began providing vans for UK camper holidays and tours - and long term camper van hire for overseas visitors from the US, Australia and New Zealand.
Hiring a camper van from Kamper Hire has also proved to be a great way to try out a Camper Van before you buy.
As buying a camper van is a bold investment, trying out a particular VW California Camper Van before handing over the hard cash makes a lot of sense. As Mark now counts himself as a bit of a camper van expert, he’s advised countless people on which Camper Vans to purchase and has hired VW California Camper Vans to lots of keen potential purchasers. In fact, one of his strict company rules is to only have campervans in his fleet which are less than two years old (and mostly they are less than a year old), one of the other things Kamper Hire offer are VW California Camper Van Sales on ex-fleet Camper Vans. A great way to get a fantastic deal on a top-spec camper van.
The erratic UK economy has meant Camper Van Hire has become even more popular.
Exchange rate dips, uncertain economy and concerns over international travel has meant that, quite rightly, people are coming back round to the idea that the UK has a lot to offer when it comes to holidaying. The staycation holiday has become more popular for sure, but people are really starting to fall back in love with Britain’s beaches, wild spaces, cultural sites and fantastic festival experiences and as a result, are looking for ways to combine getting out and about with fun, flexibility and comfort. Cue the UK campervan holiday in a luxury VW California Camper Van at really competitive prices - with the added bonus of great customer service from Kamper Hire. It’s glamping on wheels.
Mark now has a long list of happy kampers, many of who hire camper vans from Kamper Hire year after year.
He couldn’t be happier that Kamper Hire is now a thriving business and his enthusiasm is directed at always providing an excellent service and continuing to grow his Kamper Hire campervan fleet.
Part of the aim of Kamper Hire is to make it easy for people to head out on the road and make memories. Mark is a great believer in aiming for a good work/life balance and the fact that he gets to see the positive impact his business has on his customers makes a lot of his work more like fun. When he’s not working, he’s feeding his hunger for adrenaline - jumping out of planes and Kite surfing - generally with a trusty VW California camper as his luxurious accommodation.
